Thursday's micro-cap results: the cash line did more work than the revenue line

The Russell 2000 closed at a record on Thursday, finishing at 3,052.85, up 7.36 points or 0.24 percent, according to the Associated Press tally of major index closes carried by Yahoo Finance. The S&P 500 also set a record at 7,798.99, up 50.49 points or 0.65 percent, while the Nasdaq composite added 214.54 points, or 0.81 percent, to 26,803.03 and the Dow gained 69.72 points, or 0.13 percent, to 53,839.99. None of that index strength changes the arithmetic facing the smallest listed companies, several of which reported second-quarter results the same day. In those releases the number that mattered was not revenue growth but how many months of cash was left, and what the company had already done to its share count to get there.
Indaptus Therapeutics offers the starkest illustration. In its second-quarter release, the clinical-stage immunotherapy company disclosed "133,242,324 and 2,167,324 shares issued and outstanding as of June 30, 2026 and December 31, 2025, respectively." Those two figures come off the same balance sheet and are stated on the same basis; both already reflect the 1-for-28 reverse stock split Indaptus completed in June 2025, which Investing.com reported took roughly 16 million shares down to about 572,000 when it became effective after the close on June 26, 2025. On a like-for-like basis, then, the share count rose more than sixty-fold in six months.
The mechanism was disclosed in a Schedule 13D. Investor David E. Lazar signed a securities purchase agreement on December 22, 2025 covering $6 million of convertible preferred stock: 300,000 Series AA shares for $1.8 million, convertible into 6 million common shares at 20-for-1, and 700,000 Series AAA shares for $4.2 million, convertible into 105 million common shares at 150-for-1. That is beneficial ownership of 111,000,000 shares, or approximately 98 percent of the common stock, per the filing summarized by StockTitan. Stockholders approved the arrangement on February 26, 2026, and Lazar became co-chief executive and a director effective December 23, 2025. Separately, the earnings release stated that on June 17, 2026 the company "issued and sold 20,000,000 shares of common stock at $0.60 per share for aggregate gross proceeds of approximately $12.0 million before offering expenses."
What that bought was a smaller company. Indaptus reported approximately $7.6 million in cash and cash equivalents plus $4.0 million in short-term investments at June 30, 2026. Research and development expense fell to $363,127 in the quarter from $2,167,114 a year earlier, and general and administrative expense fell to $1,445,739 from $2,289,649, producing a net loss of $1,794,863 against $5,228,919 in the second quarter of 2025. The release's own summary of the position read: "Based on current operating plans and available financial resources, management believes that the Company's liquidity position has been strengthened compared to the first quarter end." The release's forward-looking-statements section still references substantial doubt about the company's ability to continue as a going concern.
PDS Biotechnology went the other way on cash. The Nasdaq-listed immunotherapy developer reported $5.6 million in cash and cash equivalents at June 30, 2026, down from $26.7 million at December 31, 2025, and a negative working capital position of $5.3 million against positive $18.8 million at year-end. The second-quarter net loss was $9.8 million, or $0.18 per basic and diluted share, against $9.4 million a year earlier. Operating expenses were cut to $6.5 million from $7.6 million, with research and development at $3.3 million versus $4.2 million and general and administrative at $3.2 million versus $3.4 million; the loss still widened because net interest expense rose to $3.3 million from $1.8 million. StockTitan's summary of the company's Form 8-K put stockholders' equity at negative $3.6 million at June 30, 2026. A quarterly loss nearly twice the size of the closing cash balance is not a subtle signal.
The company also changed course on its lead asset. According to its Form 8-K as summarized by StockTitan, PDS discontinued internal investment in PDS0101 and terminated the VERSATILE-003 Phase 3 trial, shifting its lead program to PDS0301 while seeking external partners for PDS0101. Shares traded around $0.23 on Thursday, down roughly 3.7 percent, for a market capitalization of about $13 million on 55.82 million shares outstanding, per StockAnalysis.com, which listed a 52-week range of $0.2201 to $1.5500. At that price the stock sits well below Nasdaq's $1.00 minimum closing bid price standard for continued listing, and a negative stockholders' equity balance is a second listing exposure, because Nasdaq also applies a minimum stockholders' equity test. Neither is the same problem as the funding gap, and each runs on its own clock.
Nuwellis produced better operating metrics on a much-changed capital structure. The medical device company reported second-quarter revenue of $2.0 million, up 14 percent from $1.7 million, with gross margin expanding to 76 percent from 56 percent. Operating expenses rose to $4.7 million from $3.9 million, and the net loss narrowed sharply to $4.8 million from $12.6 million. Cash and cash equivalents stood at $3.9 million at June 30, 2026, and the company said financing activity totaling approximately $12.7 million in gross proceeds through June and afterward extends its cash runway through the second quarter of 2027. Management framed the plan around growing recurring revenue and improving operating leverage in precision fluid management.
Nuwellis is also a reminder to check the split status of any per-share figure before comparing it to anything. Per the company's Form 8-K, a 1-for-35 reverse stock split became effective at 5:00 p.m. Eastern on June 25, 2026, with split-adjusted trading beginning June 26 on the Nasdaq Capital Market under an unchanged NUWE ticker and a new CUSIP. Fractional shares were rounded down with cash paid for the fraction, and preferred stock, options, restricted stock units, warrants and plan reserves were all proportionately adjusted. Any share count, price or warrant strike quoted for Nuwellis from before June 26 is on a different basis from one quoted after, and the two cannot be mixed.
Two profitable-at-the-margin names rounded out the day. Creative Realities, which trades on Nasdaq as CREX, reported second-quarter revenue of $21.5 million against $13.0 million a year earlier, with gross margin of 38.6 percent versus 38.5 percent and adjusted EBITDA of $2.0 million versus $1.1 million. The net loss widened to $4.2 million, or $0.41 per diluted share, from $1.8 million or $0.17. Cash improved to $10.7 million at June 30, 2026 from $1.6 million at December 31, 2025, but debt rose to $46.6 million from $44.0 million, and annualized recurring revenue was $20.5 million. Growth financed with leverage carries its own refinancing risk, and the debt balance is more than four times the cash balance.
LENSAR was the cleanest report of the group. The ophthalmic laser company, listed on Nasdaq as LNSR, posted second-quarter revenue of $16.5 million, up 18 percent from $13.9 million, and net income of $3.5 million against a $1.8 million loss a year earlier, with $13.6 million in cash, cash equivalents and investments at quarter-end. Management attributed the result to increasing utilization across the installed base of its ALLY system. It is the only name in this group where the quarter's earnings added to the cash balance rather than drawing it down.
The common thread is that at this end of the market, the income statement describes the past and the balance sheet describes the option set. Where quarterly cash burn approaches or exceeds cash on hand, the realistic outcomes are a raise, a partnership, a sale of assets, or a curtailment of spending — and equity raises at these prices are dilutive by construction. Readers should also note the practical hazards specific to nano-caps: wide bid-ask spreads and thin daily volume, going-concern qualifications that can appear or disappear between filings, and continued-listing standards on bid price and stockholders' equity that operate on their own clocks. None of the figures here constitute a view on any security.
